A Walk Outside

I walked outside this morning and it was very, very quiet. To me, this was sad. Last week it was warm. The birds were singing and the peepers, in the neighbor’s pond, were making a ton of noise. I loved it. After all, that racket tells me that spring is here. But than, it got cold and has the nerve to snow too! So, this morning everything was deathly quiet, no peepers peeping, no birds singing and I was freezing!

Often our lives are like that. We have a challenging season (winter) and God gives us a peek of what is ahead (spring). Then, winter seems to close in again. We get frustration and discouraged. We forget that the peek at “spring” was a precious gift from God meant to encourage us. It is meant to let us know that a change in seasons is coming and that we will make it through. A reminder that the birds will again be singing and the peepers will be peeping.

In Psalm 57, we find David crying out. He begins with “Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me”. We tend to forget that David spent about 17 years in the wilderness running from Saul, and this was after Samuel had anointed him as king! That was a very, very long winter! But then, by the time verse 7 rolls around he is declaring that his heart is steadfast, that he will sing and make music. David got himself positioned again to look forward. To “see” into what God had for him. He realized that God is the only one who fulfills His purpose for each individual (Psalm 57:2).

If you feel stuck in the dreariness of winter remember that spring will come in the spiritual just as it has in the natural progression of the seasons. Take time to look around at the grass turning green, the buds slowly appearing on the trees, the birds singing and the weather getting warmer. As you look around, thank God for taking you through the seasons of life. Cry out with David “I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth”.
